The Fat Cyclist is a blog I read regularly. He's hilarious and a really good writer. Also, I think he might be a little bit insane - though in a very lovable sort of way. Most often Fatty (as he is affectionately known) writes about riding bicycles (surprise) - road bikes and
mtn. bikes. He also writes about his
family, and his amazing wife who is fighting metastatic breast cancer. Doing his part in the fight, Fatty has raised a TON of money for the Lance Armstrong Foundation (see the tie in? cycling AND cancer!). You can help! Just go to one of his team pages for Austin, Seattle, San Jose or Philadelphia and sign up. They’ve raised more money than any other team this year, but it’s really just a start.
Anyway, Elden (Fatty's real name) cracked me up this morning with a post about a 100 mile fundraiser "Ride to Nowhere." A 100 mile ride to nowhere. Awesome! I'm in. The idea is that you ride your stationary bike, or trainer/rollers - or around your block seven thousand times - for 100 miles. What'd I tell you? Insane!
We (the cyclists) are to send in a donation and on the designated day of the ride. There is some swag involved. I've got to be honest and let you know that I'm planning on cheating. There is NO way my ADD brain could possibly ride 100 miles in one place. I'd fall asleep and have another bike crash. The teasing was bad enough the first time. Can you imagine?
(supposed) Friend: "Last time you fell off your bike you broke your arm. How'd you crash this time, Eric?"
Me: "Oh, I fell asleep."
Friend: "Huh? You dingbat."
See what I mean? So I'm going to ride the 100 miles through Lauderdale and Colbert counties. You can help me cheat - um no - I mean raise $$ for the LAF in honor of your loved one who has battled cancer, or for Fatty's wife. I'll post details on how you can help as soon as I know more.
You've got to have music for a major event of this magnitude. I'm suggesting to Fatty two theme songs for the event. Dylan wrote a song, You Ain't Goin' Nowhere, that fits the event pretty well. You can listen to it here, and the lyrics are below. And it's hard not to pick the Talking Heads song Road to Nowhere, since that's the name of the event. Again, lyrics are below.
The songs after the jump...
You Ain't Goin' Nowhere

(as sung by Mary Chapin Carpenter here)
Clouds so swift
Rain won't lift
Gate won't close
Railings froze
Get your mind off wintertime
You ain't goin' nowhere
Whoo-ee! Ride me high
Tomorrow's the day
My bride's gonna come
Oh, oh, are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair!
I don't care
How many letters they sent
Morning came and morning went
Pick up your money
And pack up your tent
You ain't goin' nowhere
Whoo-ee! Ride me high
Tomorrow's the day
My bride's gonna come
Oh, oh, are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair!
Buy me a flute
And a gun that shoots
Tailgates and substitutes
Strap yourself
To the tree with roots
You ain't goin' nowhere
Whoo-ee! Ride me high
Tomorrow's the day
My bride's gonna come
Oh, oh, are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair!
Genghis Khan
He could not keep
All his kings
Supplied with sleep
We'll climb that hill no matter how steep
When we get up to it
Whoo-ee! Ride me high
Tomorrow's the day
My bride's gonna come
Oh, oh, are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair!
Road to Nowhere
Talking Heads, on Little Creatures
Well we know where were goin'
But we don't know where we've been
And we know what were knowin'
But we cant say what we've seen
And were not little children
And we know what we want
And the future is certain
Give us time to work it out
Chorus: Were on a road to nowhere
Come on inside
Takin' that ride to nowhere
Well take that ride
I'm feelin' okay this mornin'
And you know,
Were on the road to paradise
Here we go, here we go
Chorus
Maybe you wonder where you are
I don't care
Here is where time is on our side
Take you there...take you there
Were on a road to nowhere
Were on a road to nowhere
Were on a road to nowhere
There's a city in my mind
Come along and take that ride
And its all right, baby, its all right
And its very far away
But its growing day by day
And its all right, baby, its all right
They can tell you what to do
But they'll make a fool of you
And its all right, baby, its all right
Were on a road to nowhere
